Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Father’s Day is fast approaching (June 16), and we all know one of the best ways to dad’s heart is through his stomach! Why not celebrate Father’s Day (and summer!) with something delicious.

Locally grown summer fruits and vegetables are beginning to appear in our produce aisle and many of these are perfect for grilling. Try slicing one of Hillview Farm’s onions thickly and grilling it to sweet perfection, or halve some peppers, seed them, and toss them on the grill. Corn is also delicious grilled (keep it in the husk and soak in water for 10 minutes first). Also great grilled are our many varieties of summer squash from local farms.

If burgers are on the menu for Father’s Day, try some premium grass fed and grass finished ground beef from SunFed Ranch whose cattle are born and raised in the open spaces of Northern California. Use Pretzilla Burger Buns or Bakerly Brioche Burger Buns and your favorite toppings and you’ll have burgers fit for a king.

A “Dad’s favorite” at our house are Niman Ranch Bratwurst or Aidell’s Chicken Apple Sausages with Pretzilla Sausage Buns and Anna Mae’s Smoky Sweet Mustard.

For Dad’s sweet tooth treat him to a box of Connie’s American Farmhouse English Toffee made in Yuba City.  Comin’ In Hot has a touch of heat from crushed red pepper; Ocean Crack is lightly salted; and You’re Nuts is loaded with California almonds.

For an easy summer dessert you can’t go wrong with a Fresh Strawberry Pie. Fill a 9” prebaked pie shell or graham cracker crust with about 4 cups fresh strawberries (washed and hulled).  Pour a container of Marie’s Strawberry Glaze over the berries. Chill. Top with whipped cream before serving.

Finally, offer a toast to dear old Dad with one of our new wines. The Bruin and Tempranillo from Irwin Family Wines are both excellent food pairing wines from winemaker Derek Irwin.
