No matter how you say it, tomatoes are one of our favorite fruits. (Yes, botanically they are fruits, berries actually, but we tend to think of them as vegetables in the way we eat and cook with them.)
With more than 2000 available cultivars, the flavors of tomatoes can vary widely. What we know for sure is that vine-ripe, locally grown tomatoes always taste best; and vine-ripe, locally grown is what Newcastle Produce is all about.
Most cherry tomatoes are high in sugar content and very sweet. The all time favorite of farmer Patrick from Foothill Roots Farm in Meadow Vista is Sungold. This classic, orange-gold cherry tomato is tangy, sweet and loaded with delicious tomato flavor. Patrick also keeps us well supplied with sweet saladette and New Girl tomatoes.
For candy-like flavor and a visual delight try a basket of mixed cherry tomatoes from Hillview Farm or Plum Possum Farm both in Lincoln. Both farms have chosen their favorites to include in their cherry tomato medleys.
Slicing and salad tomatoes are the specialty of farmers Michael and Shannon of Hillview Farm. Their gorgeous, meaty beefsteak tomatoes are the perfect finishing touch to any sandwich or burger, and their heirlooms are the crown jewels of the tomato world.
